Where Have The Games Gone?

BowlQuest has turned into a barren wasteland this year.  A horrible decision by bowl organizers to put a five day gap between games.

You get your bowl game appetite whetted with a couple games (including a great one in the New Mexico Bowl) and then nothing for five straight days.

The games resume Thursday night and we'll get them for three days straight before the NFL interrupts again.  Speaking of the NFL, maybe it's me, but this season has been a huge disappointment and I find myself less and less interested in the pro game.  The league promotes parity which is really code for hugely inconsistent play.  The Giants score 52 points one week and then get shut out the next.  San Diego plays its best game of the season on the road against the Steelers and follows it up with a no-show at home against the Panthers.

This pretty much sums up my feelings about the NFL. Get it, bro!

When the New York Jets are the most talked about team in the league, that's a problem and symptomatic of ESPN's influence on the pro game.  At least we don't have any more Thursday night games the rest of the way.

I'm burning vacation days this week although I don't refer to this as vacation, but as time off.  And not really time off as I'm working from home every morning.  At least it's something to do.  What else have I accomplished this week?

*Did some Christmas shopping.  I have to find gifts for Mrs. Keith despite the fact she says to not buy her much because her big gift (an HDTV, referred to in Twas The Night Before BowlQuest) came weeks ago.  Right.  Christmas morning will roll around and she'll have a couple gifts under the tree and the "I only have a few things to unwrap" comments will start.  Mrs. Keith is a gift counter, so a bunch of small things are necessary.  More shopping tomorrow and the boy's school holiday concert before the bowl game.

*For some reason, I've watched "Kelly And Michael" each day this week.  Today, John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are guests on the show.  What the hell is going on with his hair?  It's like a pelt, and while he's on screen you can't take your eyes off it.

*I saw "The Hobbit."  Pretty good, but really long.  Peter Jackson could easily have chopped 20-30 minutes out without hurting the story one bit.

Also, the 48 fps filming made it hard for me to watch the big action scenes.  I had to refocus my eyes numerous times.  If you go, sit at least half way back in the theater. Also, don't sit one row in front of a guy who was a super fan of the book.  It's a movie fella, settle down.  The guy blew his top when the movie ended because it didn't stick closer to Tolkein's book.  The movie was THREE hours long and there are TWO more coming!  The movie like I was reading a book.  Anyhow, I've never seen someone so upset after a movie.  He must be a joy at home.  When did it become socially acceptable to share your every thought aloud?  If you liked the first three, you'll probably enjoy this one.  Mr. Super Fan did not.
Also, with movies running so long now, why don't they go back to intermissions?  The crowd got really antsy about two hours in.  Give people a break and a chance to get a refill on their $5 soda pop.

*The Christmas cards are my one big duty every holiday season.  We have several older relatives in our extended families so I write one of those dorky letters everyone makes fun of.  Mine are short and mostly positive.  I did receive one years ago where the writer took the time to write a second page to attack their family.  That was interesting and I wish I kept it.  We managed to get our act together long enough to put a family picture in the cards.  It was almost the same as this one, with slightly less plastic surgery and no Lamar Odom.

*Today, Mrs. Keith and I are off for a distillery tour in Kentucky.  We're headed to Buffalo Trace, where they also make the holy grail of bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle.  You can't find Pappy on store shelves too often so maybe I can find a bottle down there.
