Utah State taking on Toledo in a battle between the soon to be defunct WAC and the MAC on the blue turf field of Boise State.
Caught every minute of this one. First half was pretty evenly played with the Aggies holding the Rockets to a couple field goals. Toledo suffered a couple injuries including one on the kick-off to their best defensive player Dan Molls, the leading tackler among FBS schools. 10-6 at half and on to a lot of commercials about potatoes. Idaho is proud of their spuds. So much that anthropomorphic potatoes are even doing the sports news there.
Pretty quiet start to the second half with Utah State adding a field goal to pad their lead and Toledo answering with a field goal to make it 13-9 thanks to a fumble by Aggies running back Kerwynn Williams. After that it was the Kerwynn Williams show, with a long touchdown burst that lead to 28 straight points, all from the ground game. Toledo managed to score their only touchdown on a kick-off return.
Final score, 41-15 and the trophy filled with potatoes was headed to wherever Utah State calls home.
That's a big bowl of spuds.
Game notes:
-Pretty sparse crowd, mainly Utah State fans. I read earlier in the week that Toledo only sold 300 tickets out of their allotment and returned the rest to Boise. Schools are supposed to pay for all the tickets they receive but Toledo did not. I like their moxy.
-Hey Keith, tell me about someone famous from Idaho other than Spuddy Buddy, the bowl mascot? Sure, how about actress Lana Turner?
Not only an acclaimed actress but also a woman who liked to get married. She went through eight marriages including one to a nightclub hypnotist who she later accused of stealing $100,000 worth of her jewelry. She was also mixed up in the murder of gangster Johnny Stampanato. Quite a life.
-For some reason, the person in charge of music at the stadium was playing Asia's "Heat of the Moment." Maybe that person was thinking of heating up some potatoes for dinner. Enjoy some early 80's super group goodness.
-This game apparently has some of the best swag for players. A North Face jacket, Kombi gloves, a Tiger Woods Victory beanie, an Ogio Bullioin backpack and, according to Utah State defensive back Will Davis, "a room full of electronics where someone tells you to choose what you like." (Thanks Sports Illustrated)
-Where's the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) going? Search me. You've got Google, look it up yourself.
-After the game we watched "The Dark Knight Rises." Pretty good, although the biggest question I had was how did Bruce Wayne return to Gotham after escaping the prison?
Spuddy Buddy's got game.
Bowl pick: I took Utah State, upping my record to 2-0. Good start.
That's it for the games until the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl with BYU taking on San Diego State in their home stadium.
I see the anthropomorphic potato in the one photo, but who is the dude on our left with the big headphones and bow tie?
ReplyDeleteTate Spudnik, man knows his football, and potatoes.
