Picking up on yesterday's theme, more changes in the coaching world including a big one right here in Cincinnati that no one saw coming.
U.C. really did pull off a shocker Saturday, hiring away Tommy Tuberville from Texas Tech. The most shocked were Red Raiders fans. Since Tuberville has tons of experience, this feels like U.C. got someone who may stick around longer than the last three head coaches. Turns out his wife is from the area and he has a nephew who happens to play quarterback in high school at South Dearborn. Hmmm, think he might get a sniff from the Bearcats?
As for Bearcat fans who moan and groan about coaching and loyalty, I guess that's over. U.C. did the exact same thing (fill in the blank) university has done in the last couple years including Tennessee which whisked away Butch Jones. Tuberville claims this is his "dream job." Just like Florida was Urban Meyer's "dream job."
Fortunately for Mr. College Football Coach, there are lots of dream job exits along the highway.
Anything change for the Belk Bowl game against Duke? Nope. Come one, it's Duke. The Blue Devils have given up almost 50 points per game in their last four games. U.C. should roll. Tuberville will probably watch from the coaches box and schmooze some high dollar alums at the game. One of the coordinators will coach the team, hoping to keep his job for next season.
The other change was Dave Taggart leaving Western Kentucky for South Florida. Guys can't wait to get to the Big East! Taggart had a gaudy 7-5 record at Western Kentucky so you can see the draw. Actually he came up with Jim Harbaugh's program at Stanford and did turn things around at WKU. This move does impact the Little Caesar's Bowl with the Hilltoppers taking on Central Michigan. The Chips feasted on terrible teams in the last four weeks to become bowl eligible so I still expect WKU to win. But who knows, it's the Pizza Bowl where anything can happen and dreams come true!
By the way, the Little Caesar's Bowl was supposed to feature a Big 10 team instead of Western Kentucky but the Big 10, being horrible, couldn't field an 8th bowl eligible team. Here's some images of Big 10 sadness.
I have no idea if The Big Show is a fan of any Big 10 school but I liked his anguish, reminds me of how I looked following several Michigan State games this season.
Actually that's how I looked yesterday realizing the only major college football was the Army/Navy game and the way those two teams played, the game should have been in black and white. Navy did have really cool looking helmets.
The Heisman Trophy was handed out to Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M last night. ESPN made certain anyone watching knew that "Johnny Football" was the first freshman to win and his name is "Johnny." Did Manziel sit out a few years between high school and college? He looks like he's 28 years old.
He was outstanding against Alabama and that won him the award. I was going to say Manti Te'o should have won the award but then I went and read his stats and he was fortunate to just be onstage. Above average linebacker with some scavenger picks. Plus, I hate Notre Dame, so screw them. It was Geno Smith's or Matt Barkley's award to lose and they did just that. Probably should have gone to Montee Ball from Wisconsin but his team kind of stunk. Who really cares. Jason White, Troy Smith and Eric Crouch are past winners in this century and they're all probably doing car dealership autograph signings for a living.
Okay, that's enough for now. Don't want to get burned out before the games event start. Maybe the top 5 bowl games tomorrow barring more coaching changes.
